In a not so serious news, an interesting article by Sara Stewart entitled “JOHNNY BE COOL: HOW DEPP BECAME ETERNALLY HIP (AND YOU CAN TOO!),” which was published by the New York Post yesterday, mentioned how you and I can be cool like Johnny Depp. In this article, Ms. Stewart mentioned clinical psychologist Adam Ferrier’s thesis, “Identifying The Underlying Constructs of Cool People,” which boils cool down to five principles: (1) self-confidence; (2) defying convention (“but not for its own sake”); (3) understating your achievements; (4) caring for others; (5) connectivity. Click on the picture below to read the entire article.

I mentioned this article because I and some of the recruiters I spoke to believe that personalities could be the deciding factor in landing a position, especially in an extremely competitive New York job market with many applicants of equal talent or skill, or in some cases, applicants with a huge disparity in work experience. Note that Senators John McCain and Hillary Clinton are more experienced for the presidency but the perception that President Obama is cool may have helped him get the votes to land the job. Maybe being cool would help you beat the other candidates in your field.
